Sometimes human beings make mistakes in their actions, and sometimes from those mistakes things as spectacular and beautiful as the Fly Geyser in Nevada are born. At the edge of the Black Rock Desert and inside the private Fly Ranch property are two geysers. The first was created almost 100 years ago and the second in 1964 located north of the original.
It is not a completely natural phenomenon, but its beauty makes it a tourist spot for people who decide to visit Nevada.
The history
During the drilling of wells in 1917 exploring new sources of geothermal energy, they resulted in what we know today as Geyser Fly. In 1964 it was decided to take advantage of geothermal energy but the liquid was not hot enough to be used for what had been initially planned. They sealed the wells, but somehow pressurized water began to come out, reaching 3 to 3.5 meters in height.
The Fly Geyser did not cease its activity, beginning to form calcareous structures with a very unique color. The combination of the calcium carbonate of the rocks with the thermophilic algae are responsible for this particular beauty.
Next to this wonder that seems almost from another planet, there are two other similar geysers although smaller and a little further away there is another geyser three meters high.
Where to see the Fly Geyser
The Fly Geyser can be seen from State Route 34, north of the town of Gerlach.
Although it is located on private property, the owners accept private visits, as long as permission is requested in advance.
